Christmas for the Kids!

Good news y'all...plenty of things are still shipping in time for Christmas! Saturday morning while sitting in bed sipping on coffee and feeding the baby, I ran through my list of gifts in my head for the kids and did some more last minute ordering. It was all here by 12 pm Monday. Super quick! I also have picked out some toys locally which are probably my favorites but these are the ones that I am able to find online {once again, reminding you to shop your local stores!! :) }

Alongside toys, we also are asking for some super useful things the kids need for their rooms and what not! Weeks needs a pair of nightstands for his big boy room, which I am so excited about. Matching nightstands...yes please! I don't even have a pair of those! Frances Ann needs some new shades for her room and we are thinking about wooden mini blinds for her. I loved the look of the bamboo shades in our last house, but the wooden minis might work just fine here! She also has been using a wooden antique high chair which is fine but sometimes I would prefer her to be in a really up to date, sturdy chair with no wonky straps- I like this one! Just seems simpler that way even if the new ones aren't as appealing to the eye. Also needed- a new sleepsack for the the next size up.

FA is obsessed with tags and so a taggies doll is very appropriate. Also, very into anything that might look like a phone or computer- hence the pink tablet. My, she has learned quick! We also think its a great time to go ahead with the pink trike that she can grow into. So cute.

Fun stuff- a power wheels jeep for my boy {they come with remote controls for parents!} although the one that we ordered is now showing up as $900 which we def did not pay! He also is getting an amazon fire from Mimi and Pop Pop. He has always loved vtech toys and we get a kick out of that cute voice on everything! This play doh set is a great deal too!

Christmas Apps

We had our little work party last night and we had just the perfect amount of food. I brought an appetizer tray, themed with a Christmas tree! I know you've probably seen the Christmas tree shaped veggie/cheese/meat tray, and I had too. I decided not to be "pinterest perfect" and just buy what I wanted on my tray and put it together on one of my large cutting boards!

My grocery list included: pre-sliced gouda cheese, pre-sliced sharp cheddar cheese, sliced sopressata, red grapes, 2 english cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, ranch seasoning packet and sour cream (for dipping). Sometimes it is such a relief to not have to be referring to a pinterest link to make something- am I right?

It was just the right amount of snacks and turned out pretty cute too. My tips: buy everything pre-sliced that you can! I cut my veggies around 4:00 and put them in ziploc baggies. When I arrived at the party all I had to do was arrange it on the cutting board, which took a few minutes. {Side note- this cutting board is very similar to mine, ours has a "C" on it to make it a little more personal. It would make a great last minute gift for someone that has everything! I also love this handled cutting board!}We love our veggies with a ranch dip, so I brought that as well. I bought an organic ranch packet and mixed it with the sour cream several hours ahead of time so it had time to blend the flavors ahead of serving.

I also brought one of my favorite dips- Cheesy Hearts of Palm Dip from Laura at the Reedy Review. I can't sing the praises of this dip enough and I can assure you it was devoured. For some reason, I think it makes a great Christmas app. This is the second time I have made it around the holidays and it has been a hit both times! If you are a fan of artichoke dip {raising my hand} then you will love this one!

What are your easy go-to apps for holiday parties?

What's on my Christmas List?

Holy moly! How is Christmas next week? I knew the month of December would fly but I didn't think it would go at such lightning speed. We are finally settling down into the house {bless!}, have decorated a tree, I am able to locate my hair dryer and straightener on a daily basis {when I even need those two items, ha!} and have even cooked a few pretty good meals. There was about a week there where it was pretty crazy and I could not wait for a sense of normalcy. I know this move in phase is short lived and I'm trying to get past the clutter and craziness by embracing sweet moments with these kiddos, even if they are simple and in reality, just the way they should be!

I definitely promised y'all some gift guides. Well here I am. I am your last minute girl. I am pulling together things that are currently in stock {as I post!} to help with any last minute purchases. We do still have a solid 7 days of business day shipping before the big day, afterall! Any requests? Leave them in the comments.

For today, I thought I would round up the items that I have asked for. My family, husband, siblings etc all have circulating lists throughout the holidays and these are some of the items that made my list this year. If you are like me you want everything {of course} but when it comes down to it, it's really hard to "ask" for something. Well these made my list, maybe they will make your last minute list too!

Everyone's favorite earring style this year. I'm not totally sold on most of the colorways I have seen but I totally love this one! It is elegant but fun. Could see it daytime to work or night time for a party!

I love being able to branch out of winter colors via Lilly Pulitzer. This turquoise silk is perfect and I love the fun touch with the shoulders!

Basically, this is the type of shirt I live in so of course I could use another. I asked for the navy, but the red is adorable!

I sing praises of Ugg slippers every year! I'm due for a new pair and I'm asking for this style to try something new. I live in Ugg slippers and boots while I am around the house in the winter! You can find me cooking dinner, walking the dogs, doing laundry...anything and everything.

Love this pretty cooler to keep your wine cold! My parents have a marble one they use all the time and I realized we don't have anything like it.

Call me crazy, but I want to add another stroller to our list! I need a double jogger and this one fits budgets and in doorways, ha! Anyone have any feedback on it?

A winter staple that I can see myself wearing as much as my Uggs!

We gutted our master closet and Stephen installed hanging rods and shelves for our clothing. We have yet to do anything for shoes, bags, accessories and I would love to go the professional route. In our last house we transformed our closet with Ikea systems and I LOVED it. Only problem is, we aren't making a trip to Ikea anytime soon. Instead, I am happy to take advantage of this solution! Any tips are welcome!

What made your list this year?

Thanksgiving Sales!

Nordstrom's sale selection is not disappointing, and the prices are crazy good! I don't remember them offering these prices ever before so it's a little exciting! I could browse and browse for hours but I rounded up a few items that caught my eye between yesterday and this morning:

nordstrom
live in legging- ordering these // ugg slipper - a Christmas must!! // crop skinny jean - one of my favorite brands of jeans // petty chelsea boot - perfect booties //
slim signature shirt -I would love an equipment shirt // britten convertible clutch - crazy good price!

J.Crew is offering 40% off everything...what?! I could totally go overboard as they are easily my favorite store but I'm trying not to. I did purchase this sweater below...I think it is perfect for the holidays and since we are NC State fans, it will be great next fall too!

How cute are these socks?

This top is adorable for holiday parties:

I wore this skirt for family pictures last week, it's also available in black and
emerald which are so pretty!

Other great deals going on today:

Shopping Small Favorites

Every year I make it a point to buy locally sourced gifts, which always end up being some of my favorites. My family owns a gift shop that has been open over 80 years, which I work at...so obviously shopping small is important to us! We just have a tiny sampling of what we sell online, so it's hard for me to point you in our direction if it isn't available for purchase at your fingertips. You can follow along on our instagram as well, where we frequently post new arrivals, special sales and so on. I think it is important in the midst of gift guides and all that to reach out to your local stores and support them. After all, if we all just shop on Amazon, those little stores will not exist one day- and that truly makes me sad! So take my ideas and run with them, buy them from your local stores and keep that economy going!

These are a few items found from small companies that I love. I mentioned this on instagram yesterday, but my sister has started a printing business with the cutest little gift tags you've ever seen. I'm mentioning the gift tags especially since we are in that season, but she does much more than that too. She has been trained in calligraphy, doing wedding invitation addressing, menus, table cards etc. I remember when we planned my wedding it was hard to find someone that did it well, on time and was reliable. So boom, there ya go ladies! If you are interested in purchasing these printed tags, simply email me or leave a message below with your color choice. We are doing paypal for these to keep things simple while she gets her etsy shop going. $12 for a pack of ten, they come as seen so you can decide how you want to attach them to your gifts. Bonus- they are not all strictly for Christmas, but can go that way for sure!

Golden Script Designs

If you are looking for a gift for someone with a new house or someone that doesn't own an address stamp...how cute are these? I'm ordering one this week so it will be here for my Christmas cards going out.

When I was in Charleston at the end of the summer, a really sweet local introduced herself in the Lilly store and recognized me from my blog {how fun is that?!}, and I later found out she had this adorable shop. These are gifts that are not only beautiful, but personalized. I would love a set of dinner napkins for special occasions, or to just have set out looking nice and pretty.

Another linen company I have had my eye on...I can't get enough of these towels with the applique monogram! They make shams that have a similar monogram that I would love, love, love for our bed! How gorgeous!

What are some of your favorite small shops? Please don't forget to shop small not only this coming Saturday, but all weekend. I've found most shops run specials just like others do all weekend long! Happy Shopping!

Christmas Inspiration - Colonial Style

I know, we are celebrating Thanksgiving this week and I will celebrate rightfully so. But, you can't deny that we are headed full throttle for Christmas. I want everyone to take a deep breath because no matter what, y'all are way ahead of the game than me. I have a kitchen and living room to unpack first, THEN I can unpack some Christmas decor. No, it's not that I have done everything else and those are the last two rooms. I just decided thats all we need {minus bedroom setups} in order to be set for Christmas. It is my very realistic approach to the holidays this year :)

So, to catch you up to speed...our new house is a white colonial with black shutters {actually they are a hint of that Williamsburg green but read black} with traditional landscaping. The inside has gorgeous pine floors throughout most of the house. We are fixing up the kitchen to a modernized white, clean kitchen with traditional elements like a brick floor, soft brass accents. The living room is right off the kitchen, along with a little dinette. Not sure if it is my mother wearing off on me but I swear I am leaning so far towards the traditional spectrum about 80% of the time, but then I add my touch to keep it perfectly modern. Everything that is old is new again, that is the saying right? Anyway, my house may not be decorated for Christmas until late December...so maybe I will just post on here the inspiration I come across!

My Beauty Buys

Hey y'all! I know, it's been a while since I've checked in on here but life continues to be super busy and the blog is always the first to give way. We got our furniture delivered last week and are working on getting set up and all that good stuff. Seems like a snails pace! I haven't shown many other pictures because the house has just been empty and I know that makes for pretty boring photos. We are hoping for some headway this week!

One thing I will definitely do this season is gift guides. I love me some gift guides! Some of my favorite gift ideas for my loved ones come from other bloggers and it really simplifies online shopping for me. I haven't figured out what guides I will do, but if you have any requests please let me know!

This isn't specifically a gift guide but could definitely double as one for fun stocking stuffers for the ladies. Most of the below are tried and true by me, with the exception of the T3 wand that is on my birthday list. I have heard such good things about it and I cannot wait to see an improvement in my post baby hair.
beauty buys

I just picked up this CC cream last week at Ulta and so far I love it. I had been using complexion rescue with no complaints but I just like to try new things from time to time. I would say the it cosmetics is slightly thicker, maybe more of a matte finish. I'm thinking that is a better alternative for winter. I've raved about this blush bronzer duo before, and if you haven't tried this dry shampoo, try it now! The scent is amazing. I love my naked2 palette for when I want to add any hints of color to my eyelids {most days I go totally neutral}. This is a fun lip color for fall and winter {in slay} that I have enjoyed. I'm always switching back and forth between drug store and department store mascara. Lancome makes some of the best mascara, in my opinion and this is my favorite I'm using now.

These are all 20% off today if you are VIB at Sephora too! It's the last day but I am picking up a few things since beauty products are never on sale!

The baby was up at 5:50 this morning, Weeks was up at 6, and I am unpacking and cleaning at the new house this morning. Sounds like a Monday! Hope yours is great :)

Kitchen + House Update

Hey y'all! I wanted to check in and give you a quick update on the status of the house and where we are as far as moving in. Here is the updated kitchen to do list:

-Paint
-Remove header above bar
-Remove chandelier and fluorescent lighting
-Add pendants and recessed lighting
-Tile Backsplash
-Replace tile floor with brick floor (!!)
-Repaint kitchen cabinets/new hardware

So, everything is going pretty smoothly as far as the kitchen is concerned. You might have seen on insta my kitchen floor update. Spoiler alert- I am obsessed with the new brick floor!! We do want to put a coat of polyurethane down on it to make it a bit smoother under foot. We also did a basketweave pattern in the mudroom which is around the corner. I am really pleased with our decision to go ahead and tackle this before we move in.

Painting, sheetrock work and electrical have all been handled. We are waiting for the ceiling to be touched up on painting from the sheetrock work before the new lighting gets installed. I know once my pendants get hung it will all come together and I cant wait!

So that leaves two projects to complete the kitchen: tiling backsplash and getting a fresh coat of paint on the kitchen cabinets. We are not in a hurry for the tile, it might be a winter project and I'm fine with that. I am trying to get the cabinets painted before we start unpacking boxes...we will need somewhere for all those dishes to go!

So, where are we as far as a timeline? Well, it changes day by day but we are looking at getting the furniture delivered this weekend. Sidenote: we packed a majority of our boxes in a POD and then the furniture got packed in a moving truck that has been sitting since it got packed. Apparently, that is no big deal because some moving trucks are packed for weeks at a time with cross country moves, so this was no different.  We have a busy November coming up and the harsh reality is that we will be unpacking in between weekend trips, work, preschool, a baby, and the upcoming holidays. I'm not over stressed about it, but ask me again once I see boxes piled high to the ceiling:)

The other work done upstairs I haven't mentioned much about {because it's a little boring} is just the painting of the bedrooms, new wood floor in our bedroom and hall, and new carpet in the other rooms. I can't decide if I want to share our experience with painting our upstairs. It has been nothing short of a disaster and I hate to mention a name with such a frustrating experience. I would love to save someone some of the headache we experienced that was definitely unnecessary! We aren't professionals but good gracious we have done our share of painting and this was a new experience for us!!

Most of all, I'm really happy that we have had time to get things done in order and done right. We ended up being really rushed with our last house because our house sold and closed so quickly, leaving us no time for work to be done before move in. This time around we have been graciously hosted by my in-laws who have let us take over their upstairs "wing" as we refer to it, which has conveniently happened as their new downstairs addition was completed. Their hospitality {and help with kids!} has been so nice as we get the kinks worked out at the new abode! Thanks for tuning in, I know posting is so sporadic these days but appreciate y'all coming back to read and catch up :)

Wardrobe Classics: Bottoms

bottoms for every occasion

Now y'all didn't think I forgot about this post did you? I know, its a little overdue for my followup to the Wardrobe Classics post- but I had quite a few of you let me know you wanted to still see this! Things just got so crazy with the move that I couldn't focus on fashion, especially when we are living this Indian Summer lifestyle here. #soreadyforfalltemps

This roundup is some of my very favorite tried and true bottoms and a few new skirts mixed in. I used to wear a lot of skirts when I was a corporate workin' lady, but these days not so much. I love, love these two options for skirts. The mini would be darling with a tailored button down and boots. The scuba skirt looks like it should hug in the right places. Sounds comfy too!

I included three of my favorite pairs of jeans, but truth be told I just wanna wear the leggings like every day of the week. They are lifechanging! Locals: we just got them in at Dee Gee's too! But again, you cannot go wrong with paige and DL1961 for denim. Make sure you try the instasculpt in DL because it is the best, flattering fit and sucks you in. For days I want some polish I wear the pixie or the martie pant- nothing beats a classic black pant. Oh, and yes I included my favorite Zella leggings...because some days those most definitely get worn with a pair of boots and oversized sweater and it passes as a real outfit. Well, at least in my eyes it does.

Any good staples I am missing out on?

New Kitchen Plans

The one thing we wanted to make sure we did right was the kitchen in our new house! It actually had great features already, but just needed some updating. I was initially a little concerned over the kitchen when we saw the listing online, but once we saw it in person I was relieved. It was a good size, had marble countertops, good quality existing cabinets and stainless steel appliances that were in great shape. However, my wheels were already spinning on how we could take this kitchen to another level! Go ahead and laugh because I said we didn't have any major renovation work to be done. But, this is really nothing compared to what we did in our last house! By the way, most of the paint colors you will see here are horrible. No offense against the previous owners because they built a beautiful home...but the paint colors...got to go!

Here is our plan in motion:
-Paint
-Remove header above bar
-Remove chandelier and fluorescent lighting
-Add pendants and recessed lighting
-Tile Backsplash
-Replace tile floor with brick floor (!!)
-Repaint kitchen cabinets/new hardware

Here is a shot looking into the kitchen. It is a galley style I guess? It opens up to a dinette {which we have never had before and I am so excited!} and the bar overlooks into the family room with double french doors onto the porch. I only mention those details because the whole area flows really nicely together and it makes a beautiful space I know we will spending most of our time.

We were unsure of how the header above the bar would play out but luck was on our side and nothing was weight bearing- so away went the wall! This is immediately what I saw happening when I stepped foot in the kitchen. It is so cool to see it unfold! Sheetrock work will be completed in the next few days.

starting the removal of header - non weight bearing:

header removed:

We had a random chandelier hanging off centered in the kitchen, plus a large fluorescent light above the sink. Both of those are being removed and we will have updated lighting. My initial vision called for large satin brass lanterns...really looking forward to seeing those babies installed!

Not happening immediately, but we will eventually do a tile backsplash. Stephen and my brother in law have done plenty of backsplashes that they are old hands at it now. Lucky to have this skill in our back pocket!

So, one thing that wasn't in the initial plan...a new floor! The rest of the downstairs {minus mud room} has beautiful pine floors. The kitchen has a tuscan-ish color tile, which wasn't horrible but not our favorite. We decided to forego a professional painter upstairs {leaving the professionals to paint just downstairs} and left room in our budget for brick floor. I know it will finish off the space really nicely and is exactly what this house calls for. We wanted to go ahead and do it in the mud room as well but are trying to stick to our budget as closely as possible!

We had decided to have the cabinets professionally painted...but, again, decided to forego that. This is something I have done a few times and it just seems silly to spend the money on something I can do myself. I know, time is money. But, again...I hate our budget to be eaten up by things like painting!! Once finished, we are replacing the hardware with satin brass. Can't wait.

In a few days we should see the kitchen put back together before it gets ripped up with new floor and eventually, working on the kitchen doors.

We really are so excited about this house and appreciate your comments and excitement as well!

Our New Home Story

If you have been following Miss Dixie for some time {thank you!} y'all know how we moved into our fixer upper two and a half years ago. At the time, that sweet little house is exactly what I needed and wanted. It needed lots of love and work...and we gave it that. It went from an outdated 1973 ranch to an up to date 2016 renovation. We saw that it needed desperate attention, but had so much potential, and that is what it got. We are so proud of our little ranch and how far it came. The only major thing left on our to-do list was a completely new kitchen. It was certainly updated but not a full renovation like we dreamed of. We love to cook and we are at that stage of life with children when so much of your time is spent in the kitchen. Oh... another biggie! We added a priceless addition to our family, who resided in one of our three bedrooms. All bedrooms were now occupied and happily so. When we moved into our house, cards were still on the table for more children. Not that we didn't want more, I just never wanted to with out a doubt assume we would be gifted with more children!

We had begun some discussions about some changes we wanted to make. I think mostly because I had spent a good part of the summer indoors with a newborn and toddler and things were really apparent what we lacked in our house. The thought came across our minds about building. I was not up for building. I had just seen my parents build a new beach house and seen the day to day ordeal of building. We had a little taste of building when we had input on our first home and that was enough in itself. We also decided large additions and renovations were off the table. I'm not sure why, but I just popped over to Zillow to browse just to see what was out there, even though we weren't looking to move. I came across this adorable house. I fell in love immediately, wondering how houses like this were even for sale in my area with out me knowing. But, I quickly dismissed it and moved on. A few days later, one of my dear friends {also in the market for a new house} sent me the same house listing telling me that she had found my new house. She didn't even know I had been browsing already! I told her to hush up....Stephen would not be on board with a move :) However, I told myself otherwise and convinced him into a showing that same weekend. This house filled the gaps of what we were missing in our current one, without compromising the detail and character that we love in a house. We are definitely old house people :) The rest is all the nitty gritty details of trying to sell your house and buy a new one. Lots of bargaining, strategizing, hoping, waiting and patience. Fortunately, it was not a long process for us since both our buyer and seller were ready to move...but, I am sure glad to have that off my shoulders.

Yep, there are some changes to be made, but nothing major  like our last house! What we plan to do will be completed within the next few weeks. I'm thinking big here and hoping I can keep y'all updated in real time even if its just tid-bits each day.

These are a few photos taken from our first showing that I snapped, but I will share more soon!

Thanks again for following along!

Comfort Foods

I hit the jackpot the other day on pinterest as far as new recipes come. Don't you love it when you have a successful pinning session? Such a simple pleasure, something I had gotten out of doing for quite some time. But now, I am seeking out new faces to follow to re-energize my feed. I sound like someone with no life :) Perfectly ok with it. I love inspiration, and particularly around a time of change. Change of season = new food, new decor. Change of house {YAY! post coming soon if you missed it on insta} = new designs, new projects. Since we are rolling into a new season, I thought I would start off our week with a recap of some comfort foods I found while browsing this weekend during Hurricane Matthew. We live on the coast of NC and yes, thankfully, we are perfectly fine. I hope all of you are too. My heart and prayers go out to those who are severely affected by this natural disaster. Flooding absolutely terrifies me and I feel for those that have had such a hard time with the storm. So scary.

So, lets get on with some comfort food...

These are all new to me so I have not tried any yet, but I intend to! One thing I would love to find more of is your go-to soup recipes that don't require 50 billion ingredients and hours of chopping. I love an easy {and fairly healthy} soup. Send them my way if you have them!!

Five Beauty Favorites

Things are all kinds of crazy busy over here and I promise to fill y'all in soon. I literally am not near my computer at all these days except to do a Harris Teeter to-go order {best idea ever!} for groceries. I think I mentioned I started back work, Weeks is in school {which requires time for drop off and pickup} and of course we have a four month old! Just wait til I tell ya what we have been doing ;)

So, I wanted to pop in real quick to let you know about these five favorites in my routine right now. They are pretty permanent but I'm not sure that I have shared them. I also have a slew of things I am putting in my draft section of posts - including the follow up to the Fall Classics post that so many of you all enjoyed!

So here we have it:

1. Nars Blush/Bronzer Duo

I picked this up in Charleston a month ago and absolutely love it. It is everyone's favorite blush color, "Orgasm", and paired with "Laguna" in the bronzer. I instantly look awakened when I use this pair each morning.

2. St. Ives Apricot Scrub
Such a cheap thrill. This scrub smells great and I use it on my legs and arms for smooth skin. It feels so good and is so cheap. Use it before shaving and applying shaving cream for a really good shave! Your skin will thank you.

3. Rodan and Fields Eye Cream
I cannot sing the praises of this little jar enough. I haven't mentioned it in a while but I am a consultant and swear by these products. I did a before and after on my eyes from last year to this year and I COULD NOT believe the difference. True believer over here. I am doing a big order tonight so if you want in on the goodness, email or comment and I will invoice you for a jar at PC pricing {$55} with no commitment! Shipping is $3.

4. Moroccanoil Dry Shampoo

Holy cow, this is the best dry shampoo ever. I feel like I just washed my hair after using it and the scent is pure amazing. Disclaimer- I don't really need dry shampoo for oily hair because my hair is thick and tends to be on the drier side. I use it mainly for the amazing smell and fresh feeling! Bonus- it also comes in two shades to help with your roots! I'm using light tones.

5. Oribe Shampoo and Conditioner

It's a pretty penny for this shampoo and conditioner but I don't mess around with post-pregnancy hair. I really feel like using this for several months has improved the health of my hair a lot. I am also using this Aveda Damage Remedy for my ends.

I am out of my Living Proof Deep Conditioner and am open to trying something else in it's place- anyone have any tried and true favorites? Anything new to your beauty lineup I need to know about?

Have a great weekend, it's gonna be a busy one for us!

Linking up to Five on Friday! :)
